BPOS (Business Productivity Online Suite), is the predecessor to Office 365. The product was Microsoft’s first run at SharePoint Online and Exchange Online as an affordable cloud offering.
BPOS was widely adopted among major firms such as Starbucks and Kraft Foods, but it was not embraced by the small business community for a number of reasons. Due to this, the brand name did not carry a strong positive connotation among IT professionals and it was re-branded as Office 365 when they released the next wave of changes.
BPOS included Exchange Online 2007, SharePoint Online 2007, and a program similar to Lync called “Office Communicator”. BPOS did not include any of the popular Office Pro Plus products that are included in Office 365.
