The Search for Perfect Collaboration in the Cloud

Microsoft recently published one company’s cloud migration story. The? process to find a cloud service which would allow the collaboration they were used to with traditional in-house services was an arduous one. Other businesses can learn from their trial-and-error process which landed them happily with Office 365.

Hickory Farms is a specialty food retailer. They sell their products online and in seasonal retail stores.



Like many businesses, they were interested in replacing their traditional IT infrastructure with cloud technology to reduce costs. When the time came to update their Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 messaging environment, the company decided to switch to a cloud service.


The switch wasn?t as seamless as they?d hoped. They were still using Microsoft Office 2007 productivity software along with the email, word processing, and spreadsheet applications offered by the cloud service. This incompatibility made document sharing and collaboration difficult. Formatting problems ensued and IT staff was consumed with problem management.


Consistency has a high value to a multi-layer business like Hickory Farms.


After a year of formatting struggle Hickory Farms had reached their limit. They knew it was time to find another route. They considered abandoning the cloud completely and going back to on-premises Exchange Server email.


Before leaving the cloud they gave the beta version of Office 365 a try and loved it.


Hickory Farms migrated to Office 365. They purchased subscriptions for every employee in their headquarters as well as two other locations and all field employees.


Employees found ease in the familiarity of an all Microsoft experience. With Office 365 employees are able to collaborate more effectively with their colleagues both inside and outside the company. They?ve streamlined IT management, avoided some costs, and provided flexibility for their flux season operations. Not only is the business communicating better to the tune of overall productivity and employee satisfaction, but they are also alleviating IT staff of the responsibility of remedying repetitive problems which operating in two separate collaboration environments creates.
